Bagley Man Faces Felony Drug, DWI Charges

Bagley (trfnews.i234.me) — Stephan Thomas Thompson faces felony drug possession and third-degree DWI charges in Clearwater County.

Prosecutors allege Thompson possessed amphetamine during an August 19, 2026, traffic stop in Bagley.

He also faces a gross misdemeanor DWI charge involving an alleged Schedule I or II controlled substance.

The complaint says a prior DWI-related conviction supports the third-degree DWI enhancement.

Traffic Stop Begins in Bagley

Police stopped Thompson around 4:50 p.m. after noticing a center brake light was not working.

The stop happened on Lomond Drive in Bagley, according to the criminal complaint.

Thompson was the driver and only person inside the vehicle.

Investigators reported that he was sweating heavily and had visible shaking in his hands.

Police also said Thompson fumbled with his wallet while looking for identification.

A records check showed his driver’s license was revoked.

The complaint says the revocation followed a 2024 DWI-related case.

Vehicle Search Finds Pills

Police decided to tow the vehicle after learning it was uninsured.

An inventory search followed, according to the complaint.

Investigators found several pill bottles inside the vehicle.

One bottle had its label removed and contained several types of pills.

Police identified one pill as amphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance.

Investigators also found a glass smoking device containing white and brown residue.

The complaint says the residue appeared consistent with methamphetamine.

Thompson was taken to the Clearwater County Jail.

Urine Sample Collected

Investigators obtained a search warrant for a blood or urine sample.

Thompson agreed to provide a urine sample after being shown the warrant.

The complaint says the sample would be sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for testing.

The probable-cause narrative provided does not include a final laboratory result.

However, prosecutors charged Thompson under Minnesota’s controlled-substance DWI provision.

That law prohibits driving with certain Schedule I or II substances or metabolites in the body.

Two Charges Filed

The drug charge is filed under Minnesota Statute 152.025.

Fifth-degree possession can carry up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Minnesota law has a gross-misdemeanor exception for certain small amounts when no qualifying prior drug conviction exists.

The complaint lists a 2024 fifth-degree controlled-substance conviction for Thompson.

The DWI charge cites Minnesota Statute 169A.20.

Third-degree DWI is addressed under Minnesota Statute 169A.26.

Third-degree DWI is a gross misdemeanor when one aggravating factor is present.

The complaint cites Thompson’s 2024 DWI test-refusal conviction as that aggravating factor.

A gross misdemeanor can carry up to 364 days in jail and a $3,000 fine.
