Sturgis Rally Crashes Kill 2, Injure 13

STURGIS, S.D. (trfnews.i234.me) — Two motorcyclists died and 13 people were injured in 11 new crashes across the Black Hills.

The crashes were included in the South Dakota Highway Patrol’s latest Rally Tally report.

The incidents happened between 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, and 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The reports cover investigations handled by the South Dakota Highway Patrol. They do not include cases handled by other local agencies.

Two Riders Killed

A 46-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash near Hill City Monday afternoon.

Authorities said the rider was northbound on Deerfield Road on a 2008 Harley-Davidson.

The motorcycle passed another vehicle in a no-passing zone, according to the Highway Patrol.

The rider lost control while returning to the northbound lane. The motorcycle entered a ditch and rolled.

The rider was not wearing a helmet and died from his injuries.

A second fatal crash happened inside Custer State Park near Stockade Lake.

A 63-year-old man was riding west on U.S. 16A when his Yamaha left the roadway.

The motorcycle overturned in a ditch, throwing the rider from the bike. He suffered fatal injuries.

Authorities had not released either victim’s name pending family notification.

Several Riders Taken To Hospitals

Three people were hurt when a Polaris RZR overturned near Sheridan Lake Road early Tuesday.

Three more people were injured during a two-motorcycle crash near Mount Rushmore.

Authorities said one motorcycle crossed the center line while traveling through a curve.

It then struck an approaching motorcycle. All three injured people were taken to a Rapid City hospital.

In Sturgis, a motorcycle passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries during a three-vehicle collision.

The crash happened near Junction Avenue and Park Street.

Other Black Hills Crashes Reported

A 69-year-old rider suffered serious injuries after crashing on Nemo Road.

A 29-year-old motorcyclist was seriously injured after leaving Vanocker Canyon Road south of Sturgis.

Other crashes were reported in Spearfish Canyon, Custer State Park, near Jewel Cave and near Rochford.

An 82-year-old rider was hospitalized after a crash on Rochford Road. Authorities said his injuries were not life-threatening.

The 2026 rally runs Aug. 7 through Aug. 16. Event information is available from the City of Sturgis Rally Department.
