Minneapolis Crash Kills 18-Year-Old on I-94
Minneapolis (trfnews.i234.me) — An 18-year-old Eden Prairie man died Sunday after a crash on Interstate 94.
The crash happened on southbound I-94 near Olson Memorial Highway in Minneapolis.
The Minnesota State Patrol said the man was driving a 2005 Ford Focus.
The Ford was approaching Olson Memorial Highway before the first impact.
The car struck an attenuator near the point where the interstate and Lyndale Avenue exit lanes separate.
An attenuator is a safety device designed to reduce the force of a vehicle crash.
Driver Hit After Leaving Vehicle
After the first collision, the 18-year-old got out of the Ford Focus.
A southbound 2021 Tesla Model 3 then struck him near the crash area.
The Eden Prairie man suffered fatal injuries after being hit by the passing vehicle.
The State Patrol said he was not wearing a seat belt during the initial crash.
The victim’s name was not released in the initial incident report.
No Injuries Reported In Tesla
The Tesla driver was a 21-year-old man from Champlin.
A 22-year-old woman from Coon Rapids was riding as a passenger.
Neither person in the Tesla reported injuries after the collision.
Both occupants were wearing seat belts, according to the crash report.
Investigators said alcohol was not suspected for any drivers involved.
The road surface was dry when the crashes occurred.
Emergency Crews Respond
Minneapolis Fire and Minneapolis EMS were among the agencies sent to the interstate.
Hennepin Healthcare also responded to assist at the crash scene.
Cardinal Towing helped with the vehicle response and cleanup.
The Minnesota State Patrol’s West Metro district reported the fatal crash.
The agency continues to investigate what caused the first collision.
Officials have not released more details about why the Ford struck the attenuator.
The investigation may include vehicle evidence, roadway information, and witness statements.
No criminal charges were announced in the initial incident report.
Authorities have not identified the 18-year-old victim publicly.
