Sturgis Rally Crashes Injure 6 Across Black Hills
STURGIS, S.D. (trfnews.i234.me) — Four Sunday crashes injured six people during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
The crashes happened across the Black Hills during the second day of Rally Tally reporting.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol reported the incidents Monday.
The tally covers Highway Patrol investigations between 6 a.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday.
Statistics from local police departments and county sheriff’s offices are not included.
Motorcycle Strikes Deer Near Lead
A motorcycle struck a deer shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday near Lead.
The 2016 Harley-Davidson was traveling south on U.S. Highway 385.
The crash happened about four miles southeast of Lead.
A 51-year-old man was driving the motorcycle.
A 51-year-old woman was riding as a passenger.
Both suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
They were taken to a hospital in Deadwood for treatment.
Crash Near Hermosa Injures Passenger
Another crash happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. north of Hermosa.
A Chevrolet Trax turned north onto South Dakota Highway 79 from Gumbo Lilly Lane.
Authorities said the vehicle slowed because a pedestrian was in the roadway.
A northbound Jeep Wrangler tried to avoid the Trax.
The Jeep then struck the rear of the Trax.
A 69-year-old woman riding in the Trax suffered minor injuries.
Motorcyclist Hurt Near Hill City
A third crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. near Hill City.
A Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling west on U.S. Highway 16.
Authorities said a Pontiac LeMans crossed the highway from Reno Gulch Road.
The Pontiac failed to yield, according to the Highway Patrol.
The motorcycle struck the car.
The 32-year-old rider was thrown from the motorcycle.
He was wearing a helmet.
He was taken to a Rapid City hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The 77-year-old Pontiac driver was not injured.
Two Riders Injured in Rapid City
A fourth crash happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. in Rapid City.
A Harley-Davidson was traveling west on Tatanka Road.
Authorities said the motorcycle failed to yield near Deadwood Avenue.
The motorcycle then struck the driver’s side of an SUV.
The 50-year-old motorcycle driver and 53-year-old passenger were injured.
Both were taken to a Rapid City hospital.
The SUV driver was not injured.
DUI Arrests and Citations Increase
Highway Patrol figures also show 40 DUI arrests through two reporting days.
That compares with 38 arrests during the same reporting period in 2025.
Troopers also recorded 1,918 traffic stops and criminal contacts.
About 36% resulted in citations instead of warnings.
