Ogema Man Charged in Registration Case

OGEMA (trfnews.i234.me) — An Ogema man faces two felony charges involving Minnesota’s predatory offender registration law.

Shai Charles Baity, 29, is charged in Becker County District Court. The complaint also requests a warrant for his arrest.

Baity is charged with knowingly failing to meet a registration requirement. He also faces a charge of intentionally providing false information.

Each charge carries a possible prison sentence of up to five years. Each also carries a possible $10,000 fine.

Verification Form Allegedly Not Returned

The complaint states Baity must register under Minnesota law because of a prior conviction.

Authorities arrested Baity on April 13 for possible registration violations. Prosecutors did not file charges at that time.

He was released from custody on April 14.

Baity then registered an address on 295th Avenue in Ogema. He changed that address one day later.

The new address was also located on 295th Avenue in Becker County.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension mailed a verification form there on May 1.

The form was due May 15, according to the complaint.

Authorities allege Baity did not sign or return the required form. He was listed as noncompliant beginning May 17.

Investigators visited one of Baity’s previously registered addresses on June 5.

A man at that home directed investigators to a neighboring residence.

The woman living next door said Baity did not live at her home.

She also said he had never stayed overnight there, according to the complaint.

The woman confirmed her house number matched Baity’s registered address.

Authorities allege the statement showed Baity provided false address information.

The reported conduct occurred between April 15 and June 10.

The charges were filed under Minnesota Statute 243.166.

A criminal complaint contains allegations. Baity is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Court records stated Baity’s location was unknown when authorities requested the warrant.
