Mahnomen Casino Assault Leads to Felony Charge

Mahnomen, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — A Detroit Lakes man faces a felony charge after an alleged casino hallway attack.

Casey Leroy Stewart, 22, is charged with third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm.

The charge was filed in Mahnomen County District Court under case number 44-CR-26-383.

The alleged assault happened early July 5 at Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen.

Victim Found Unconscious

According to the criminal complaint, authorities received an assault report around 2:26 a.m.

Casino staff found the victim unconscious in a hallway.

The victim was bleeding from both ears. He also had a mark near his right eye.

The complaint states that the victim appeared confused and had little memory of the attack.

He reportedly told investigators that two people had been stomping on him.

The victim also said he did not know how he reached the hallway.

Investigators reviewed casino surveillance footage following the reported assault.

The video allegedly showed one man punching the victim and knocking him down.

That man then allegedly struck the victim several times while he was on the floor.

A second man allegedly arrived and stomped near the victim’s head.

The complaint says both men left the victim lying motionless in the hallway.

The two men were later seen entering a casino room, according to the complaint.

They allegedly left the building and walked toward the Stardust parking lot.

Investigators believed they departed in an older silver Ford Mustang with dark license plates.

Investigators identified Casey Stewart and Eljay Stewart as possible suspects.

Driver’s license photographs allegedly matched the men shown in the surveillance footage.

Authorities later located the silver Mustang at Country Manor Trailer Park.

A neighbor reported seeing Casey Stewart and Eljay Stewart enter a trailer.

Both men eventually left the trailer and were arrested, the complaint states.

The provided complaint charges Casey Stewart with one felony count of third-degree assault.

Under Minnesota Statute 609.223, a conviction can bring five years in prison.

The offense also carries a possible $10,000 fine.
