Thief River Falls Man Charged in Camper Assault

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn.trfnews.i234.me — A second local man faces felony charges after an alleged assault at a rural camper.

Jacob Ryan Lasin Brummitt, 23, was arrested in connection with the Sunday, June 14, incident.

Prosecutors charged Brummitt with first-degree burglary of a dwelling. He also faces aiding and abetting third-degree assault.

Juvenile Reported Concussion and Other Injuries

The alleged attack happened at a camper on 137th Street Northeast, according to the criminal complaint.

A juvenile suffered a concussion and other injuries during the incident. A deputy photographed the reported wounds.

The juvenile said a girl entered the camper without permission. She allegedly struck him several times.

The complaint says five men then entered the dark camper. The juvenile said several people punched and stomped him.

He identified Justin Alan Jourdain as one alleged attacker. He also said Brummitt may have entered the camper first.

The juvenile could not identify every person involved. He said there were no lights inside the camper.

Witnesses Describe Activity Around Camper

Two witnesses told investigators they traveled to the camper with Brummitt and Jourdain.

One witness said Jourdain asked them to pick up Brummitt from a casino. They then followed a pickup to the camper.

The witness said Brummitt and Jourdain entered the camper. The camper then began shaking.

Another witness said the girl started hitting the juvenile. Brummitt and Jourdain then allegedly joined the assault.

A friend outside the camper reported hearing threats. He also said someone displayed a black handgun.

Another witness said nobody had a gun. The complaint does not resolve those conflicting statements.

Earlier Dispute Mentioned in Complaint

Witnesses said the incident followed an earlier dispute near Gleason Avenue.

One man allegedly called Jourdain for backup after that dispute. The group later returned to the camper.

A witness said people tried to calm the situation. However, Jourdain allegedly continued encouraging the group.

Another person reported hearing threats against someone and that person’s family.

One witness said Jourdain called Brummitt his “fighter cousin.” Jourdain allegedly described himself as backup for another man.

Jourdain also claimed he was unarmed and never entered the camper, according to the complaint.

Case Remains Pending

It remains unclear whether more people will face charges. Jourdain faces a separate felony terroristic threats charge.

Brummitt and Jourdain are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
