St. Paul (trfnews.i234.me) — Minnesotans have a key deadline to meet if they want health coverage to start January 1, 2026.

MNsure is the state’s marketplace for private health plans. It is also where many shoppers qualify for financial help.

Deadline for Jan. 1 coverage

MNsure says the deadline to enroll for coverage that starts January 1 is 11:59 p.m. on Monday, December 15.

People who miss that cutoff can still enroll later. Coverage would start on February 1 instead.

Open enrollment for 2026 continues through January 15, 2026.

Why many families may pay more

Health policy changes in Washington are adding pressure on costs.

On December 11, the U.S. Senate rejected proposals to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits.

Those credits help many marketplace shoppers pay lower monthly premiums.

MNsure CEO Libby Caulum says help is still available for many Minnesotans.

MNsure estimates eligible households can still save an average of about $600 per month in 2026.

But state officials warn that many people could still see higher bills without expanded federal credits.

North Star Policy Action says tens of thousands in Minnesota could face higher costs.

The group estimates about 8,000 Minnesotans could lose coverage if credits lapse.

Advocates also warn about a wider ripple effect.

They say unpaid medical bills can raise costs across the health system.
