Warroad, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — A Warroad woman faces a gross misdemeanor theft charge in Roseau County District Court.
According to a criminal complaint, 33-year-old Mariah Lynn Lane is charged with theft by swindle. Prosecutors allege she deposited two payroll checks electronically and later cashed those same checks in person.
The complaint says the case involves Lane’s former employer, 1901 Public House, located at 118 Main Ave. NE in Warroad. The business contacted police on Nov. 20, 2025, after reporting concerns about two payroll checks.
What The Complaint Says
According to court records, the first check was dated Oct. 24, 2025. That check was for $180.31. The second check was dated Nov. 7, 2025. That check was for $394.32.
The complaint says both checks were first deposited through mobile banking. It also says both checks were later cashed in person at a bank in Bemidji.
Bank information listed in the complaint says check No. 1028 was mobile deposited on Oct. 28, 2025. It was later cashed in person on Nov. 18, 2025.
The complaint says check No. 1048 was mobile deposited on Nov. 10, 2025. It was then cashed in person on Nov. 12, 2025.
Prosecutors allege Lane received a total benefit of $574.63 from the two checks.
Lane’s Response
According to the complaint, Lane told police she made the in-person deposit because she did not think the mobile deposit went through. The complaint also says police gave her several chances to provide more information.
Authorities say no additional explanation was provided after that contact.
Case Status
The charge was filed under Minnesota’s theft statute as a gross misdemeanor. Court records list a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.
The complaint also states that Lane has three prior misdemeanor theft convictions from earlier cases.
The case is now pending in Roseau County District Court. A charge is only an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
