Becker County (trfnews.i234.me) — A 38-year-old Detroit Lakes man is accused of threatening a child and a police officer during a late night disturbance. The case is now filed in Becker County District Court.

Prosecutors have charged Samuel Joseph Renteria with three felony counts. He faces two counts of threats of violence with reckless disregard. He also faces one count of felony domestic assault. Court records say he remains in custody under an order of detention.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were called to an apartment on Barbara Avenue around 3:30 a.m. on November 27. A woman reported that Renteria was drunk and that she feared for her children’s safety. When officers arrived, they found a 12-year-old child crying and shaking inside the apartment.

The child told police that Renteria had chased him into a bedroom. The boy said he hid under the covers. While the child hid, Renteria allegedly made several threats. Court documents say he told the child, “I’m going to end you.” He also said, “I’m going to show you what fear is.” The child told officers he believed he could be killed or badly beaten.

Officers say Renteria also made threats against law enforcement at the scene. He allegedly said he would let his German Shepherd out of its kennel. The complaint states that he also made personal threats toward one officer. He said he would learn the officer’s address and wait outside his home. Court papers quote him as saying, “If you come anywhere near me, we will have a situation.”

Court records show Renteria has prior assault convictions. He was convicted of misdemeanor domestic assault in 2019. He was later convicted of fifth-degree assault in 2022. Because of those earlier cases, this new domestic assault charge is now a felony level offense under Minnesota law.

Each felony count carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison. The court could also impose a fine of up to $10,000. Full details on Minnesota domestic assault law are available through the Minnesota Statutes. Information on threats of violence laws is also posted on the state statute site.

Renteria is being held at the Becker County Jail. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance in this case today in Becker County District Court. People who experience domestic abuse can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for support and safety planning.

The charges in this case are accusations only. Samuel Joseph Renteria is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
