Traverse County law enforcement received a 911 call at about 3:55 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026.
The caller reported a house fire in Wheaton.
Fire crews and other first responders went to 1307 Broadway Avenue.
Officials said they found the homeowner inside the residence.
The man was identified as Kevin Kruize, 63.
Authorities said responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene.
Kruize was taken to a hospital.
He was later pronounced dead, officials said.
