Grand Forks Man Faces Felony in Pawn Shop Theft
GRAND FORKS, N.D. ( trfnews.i234.me ) — A Grand Forks man’s latest shoplifting case has escalated to a felony due to multiple prior convictions. According to court documents, Daniel Robert Nelson Jr. is now facing a felony theft of property charge following an alleged incident at First National Pawn in September.
Surveillance video reportedly shows Nelson taking two signed replica football helmets valued at $358. The incident led investigators to identify Nelson as the suspect, resulting in upgraded charges.
Under North Dakota law, theft becomes a felony when a person commits their fourth or subsequent offense within a four-year period. Records show Nelson has multiple prior convictions for similar crimes, prompting prosecutors to elevate the latest case.
This case marks another addition to Nelson’s record of repeated theft-related offenses. Authorities say the pattern of shoplifting incidents over the years has triggered stricter penalties.
No injuries or disturbances were reported during the September theft. Police recovered store video as evidence, and the case was referred to the Grand Forks County State’s Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
The case highlights the potential consequences of repeat property crimes under North Dakota law, where repeated shoplifting offenses can escalate to a felony level.
