Grand Forks County: Man Killed In Train-Vehicle Crash
GRAND FORKS COUNTY (trfnews.i234.me) — Authorities have released the name of the man killed in a train-vehicle crash west of Grand Forks on Saturday night.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 10:00 p.m. on October 4, 2025, in the 1600 block of 17th Avenue Northeast, about three miles west of Grand Forks.
Investigators say a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 76-year-old Scott Wahlstrand of Grand Forks became high-centered on the railroad tracks near the intersection of 16th Street NE and 17th Avenue NE. The vehicle was facing south when an eastbound BNSF train struck it.
The impact dragged the vehicle about 60 feet before it came to rest along the tracks. Wahlstrand, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The airbags in the vehicle had deployed.
Conditions at the time of the crash were clear and dry. Agencies responding to the scene included the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Forks Fire Department, and Altru Ambulance Service.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
