GRAND FORKS COUNTY (trfnews.i234.me) — Authorities say a 76-year-old man from Grand Forks was killed after his vehicle was hit by a train late Saturday night.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 10:00 p.m. at the railroad crossing at Demers Avenue and Airport Road, west of Grand Forks. The report states that a Chevrolet Equinox became high-centered on the tracks, facing south, when an eastbound BNSF train struck it.

The train dragged the vehicle about 60 feet before both came to rest along the tracks. The driver, who has not yet been publicly identified, suffered fatal injuries at the scene.

First responders from multiple agencies, including the Grand Forks Fire Department and local emergency medical crews, were dispatched to the scene. The intersection was closed for several hours while the North Dakota Highway Patrol and BNSF officials investigated.

Authorities have not yet released details on why the vehicle became stuck on the tracks. No one else was in the vehicle, and no injuries were reported among the train crew.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol and BNSF Railway safety officials. The victim’s name will be released once family members have been notified.
