Becker County (trfnews.i234.me) – A Detroit Lakes man with a history of domestic violence convictions has been sentenced again for assaulting the same victim.

Christopher Lee Peake, 36, was sentenced in Becker County District Court to 21 months in state prison, stayed for five years, after pleading guilty to felony domestic assault by strangulation. A second felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation was dismissed in a plea agreement.

January 2024 Incidents

Court records show the assaults took place over two days in January 2024.

  • Jan. 20: Peake’s significant other confronted him about alleged infidelity, and he responded by choking her with both hands for eight to 10 seconds. She reported being unable to breathe.

  • Jan. 21: Peake struck her, then grabbed her throat multiple times throughout the day, choking her with one or both hands. In one instance, she said her feet were nearly lifted off the ground, and she experienced blurry vision. During a third choking incident, Peake reportedly told her: “You’re gonna piss me off to the point I’m not going to stop.” The victim had visible redness on her neck.

Peake was arrested on an active burglary warrant following the assaults.

Prior Domestic Violence Convictions

Peake has prior convictions involving the same victim:

  • 2010: Misdemeanor domestic violence

  • 2019: Felony domestic assault by strangulation

  • 2019: Felony violation of a no-contact order while on pre-sentencing release

Sentencing Conditions

On July 28, 2025, Judge Michelle W. Lawson ordered Peake to:

  • Serve 111 days in jail (already credited)

  • Pay $885 in fines and court fees

  • Abstain from alcohol and drugs

  • Not possess firearms or ammunition

  • Complete a comprehensive assessment with aftercare

  • Participate in cognitive skills training and treatment as directed

  • Complete a domestic abuse batterer’s intervention program

Peake was placed on five years of supervised probation. A domestic abuse no-contact order was also issued, protecting the victim.
