Saint Paul (trfnews.i234.me) – A violent standoff in the Payne/Phalen neighborhood on Friday ended in tragedy when a man who exchanged gunfire with police, injured two women, and took a child through multiple stores, died by suicide inside a Cub Foods.

The chaos began around 11:40 a.m. on Jessamine Lane after a report of a gun fired in a home. The suspect fled with a child, later found at Aldi on Clarence Street, where he pointed a gun at officers and fled again. The child was recovered safely.

As the man ran, he passed Destiny Café 2, where two women were shot. He continued into the Cub Foods store, prompting a massive response from SWAT and negotiators. After efforts to de-escalate, he was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Mayor Melvin Carter praised first responders, saying they helped avoid “a far more dangerous situation.” The Minnesota BCA is reviewing bodycam footage and leading the investigation. The suspect’s name has not yet been released.
