MINNEAPOLIS, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – Idris Haji-Mohamed, 29, of Rochester, was sentenced to 25½ years in prison for the 2022 murder of Jeremy Ellis near U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Hennepin County Judge Paul Scoggin handed down the 305-month sentence on Friday, May 24, as court documents revealed on Tuesday. A jury convicted Haji-Mohamed of two counts of second-degree murder last month.
Haji-Mohamed, who faced up to 40 years in prison, will receive credit for 511 days served and may be released after completing two-thirds of his sentence. His sentencing paves the way for his transport to Moorhead, where he faces first-degree murder charges for the 2021 killing of Abdi Mohamed Abdi.
Prosecutors allege Haji-Mohamed followed Abdi from a gas station to an apartment parking lot and shot him multiple times. The motive remains undisclosed. The Moorhead trial is set for September 23, where Haji-Mohamed could face life in prison if convicted.
While out on bail for the Moorhead charges, Haji-Mohamed shot Ellis, claiming self-defense. Ellis allegedly threatened him with a gun after Haji-Mohamed refused to buy pills.
Haji-Mohamed’s attorneys argue another person resembling him, Abdi Omar Abukar, was responsible for Abdi’s murder. However, Abukar was killed in December 2022. Ibrahim Abdiaziz Isaac was also convicted in connection to Abdi’s death and is serving a life sentence without parole.
