Minneapolis (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 Gov. Tim Walz says a deadly ICE shooting in Minneapolis was \u201cpreventable\u201d and \u201cunnecessary.\u201d He urged calm and peaceful protest.<\/p>\n

What happened<\/h2>\n

An officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> fatally shot Renee Nicole Macklin Good, 37, on Wednesday morning, Jan. 7, 2026. Officials said she was in her SUV on a snowy residential street.<\/p>\n

Bystander video shows agents at the driver\u2019s door as the vehicle begins to move. An agent in front of the SUV fired at close range. The SUV then crashed into parked vehicles.<\/p>\n

City officials said Good was a U.S. citizen and not the target of the operation. The Associated Press reported she was born in Colorado and was a mother of three.<\/p>\n

Walz response<\/h2>\n

Walz said he has seen video of the encounter. He rejected the federal claim that the shooting was self-defense. He said the state will demand \u201caccountability and justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walz also said he issued a warning order to prepare the Minnesota National Guard. He said the Guard could be deployed if needed. He asked people to protest safely and avoid violence.<\/p>\n

In remarks carried by CBS News<\/a>, Walz added: \u201cWe do not need any further help from the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n

Federal account disputed<\/h2>\n

Homeland Security<\/a> said Good tried to use her vehicle as a weapon. Secretary Kristi Noem called it \u201cdomestic terrorism\u201d and said an agent fired \u201cdefensive shots.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said video does not support that account. He called the shooting reckless and urged ICE to leave Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

Investigation and protests<\/h2>\n

The FBI<\/a> is reviewing the shooting. Minnesota\u2019s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension<\/a> is also involved.<\/p>\n

Protests and a vigil formed near the shooting scene. Some law enforcement officers used crowd-control tools during clashes. Minneapolis schools canceled classes and activities Thursday as a safety step.<\/p>\n

Broader enforcement surge<\/h2>\n

DHS says more than 2,000 federal officers were deployed to the Twin Cities area. Noem said more than 1,500 people were arrested in recent weeks. Local leaders say the surge has raised fear and tension.<\/p>\n
