He was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls. Mike attended “Fort” Knox Elementary School and Franklin Middle School before graduating in 1972 from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Mike began his career in maintenance in 1971, working part-time for the Thief River Falls School District #564. Within just two years, his hard work and dedication earned him a full-time position, which he held until 1979. He then joined the maintenance department at Northwest Community & Technical College/Northland College, where he spent the next 34 years before retiring on December 31, 2013.

Mike had a lifelong love for the outdoors and enjoyed everything from snowmobiling and fishing to four-wheeling and hunting. He especially loved spending time in Fourtown, riding the trails, visiting with neighbors, and simply enjoying the peace and quiet of the outdoors. When he wasn’t out exploring, Mike could often be found tinkering with anything mechanical, always finding something to work on or fix.

Above all, Mike cherished time spent with his family. Whether gathering for the holidays or spending time together in Fourtown, being surrounded by those he loved meant the world to him. His family also included his beloved four-legged companions throughout the years—Duffy, Bruno, Chipper, and Oakley. They went everywhere with him and were some of his very best trail-riding buddies.

Mike will be fondly remembered for his quick wit, unforgettable one-liners, and the way he could bring a smile to anyone’s face. His sense of humor, love for the outdoors, and the memories made with family and friends will be treasured by all who knew and loved him.

Mike is survived by his brother, Jerry (Karin) Hanson of Fargo, ND; sister, Sherry (Tom) Koop of Brainerd, MN; nieces and nephews, Chad (Kari) Hanson, Jason (Erica) Hanson, Heather (Brian) Jung, Kelly (Jake) Haraldson, Josh (Emily) Koop, and Kaylee (Nathan) Bates; great-nieces and nephews, Gabby, Gracie, Isabella, Declan, Lia, Eva, Harper, Corbin, Blake, Lillie, Cooper, Natalie, Noah, Oliver, and Lucas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Elizabeth “Betty” Hanson; and his great-nephew, Thomas Joshua Koop.

Burial will follow the service at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.

Family condolences may be shared at www.johnsonfuneralservice.com.

Pallbearers: Mike’s nephews, Chad Hanson, Jason Hanson, Brian Jung, Jake Haraldson, Josh Koop, and friend, Tim Bergerson.

Michael Thomas Hanson, age 73, of Grygla, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
