PARK RAPIDS, Minn.<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2013 A Park Rapids man faces a felony charge after investigators allegedly discovered he had failed to update his required predatory offender registration for approximately two months.<\/p>\n

Douglas Alan Denio, 54, of Park Rapids<\/strong>, is charged with knowingly failing to comply with Minnesota’s predatory offender registration requirements.<\/p>\n

According to a criminal complaint filed in Hubbard County District Court, investigators found Denio sleeping inside a vehicle in a former grocery store parking lot.<\/p>\n

Compliance Check Reveals Address Discrepancy<\/h2>\n

On October 16, 2026, Hubbard County authorities conducted a compliance check involving Denio.<\/p>\n

Investigators visited his last registered address along U.S. Highway 71.<\/p>\n

According to court documents, they learned Denio no longer lived at that location.<\/p>\n

Authorities received information suggesting he might be staying at the Rustic Inn in Park Rapids.<\/p>\n

Denio was required to maintain updated registration information because of a previous criminal sexual conduct conviction.<\/p>\n

Police Find Man Sleeping Inside Vehicle<\/h2>\n

Earlier that morning, at approximately 3:56 a.m., Park Rapids police investigated a suspicious vehicle parked outside a former Coborn’s grocery store.<\/p>\n

Officers contacted Denio and questioned him about his registration status.<\/p>\n

According to the complaint, Denio claimed he had registered with local law enforcement.<\/p>\n

However, officers reportedly could not confirm that he had registered as a person without a primary address.<\/p>\n

Denio was advised to update his registration.<\/p>\n

At approximately 10:32 a.m., investigators returned to the parking lot and located the vehicle.<\/p>\n

They found Denio sleeping in the passenger seat.<\/p>\n

Man Reports Living Without Permanent Address<\/h2>\n

During questioning, Denio acknowledged that he had been without a permanent residence for approximately two months.<\/p>\n

He reportedly told investigators he had been staying at various locations around Park Rapids.<\/p>\n

According to court documents, Denio had not updated his registration after leaving his previous residence.<\/p>\n

Investigators also discovered that he had a cellphone number that was not listed in his registration records.<\/p>\n

Denio reportedly said he had been using that number for approximately two weeks.<\/p>\n

Vehicle Information Allegedly Not Registered<\/h2>\n

Investigators asked Denio about the vehicle in which he was staying.<\/p>\n

According to the complaint, Denio stated that he owned the vehicle and had possessed it for approximately one year.<\/p>\n

Authorities confirmed the vehicle was registered in his name.<\/p>\n

However, investigators reportedly found no vehicle information listed in his predatory offender registration records.<\/p>\n

When questioned about the missing updates, Denio allegedly explained that he believed remaining in the same city meant he did not need to update his registration.<\/p>\n

Investigators subsequently placed him under arrest.<\/p>\n

Felony Registration Violation Filed<\/h2>\n

Minnesota law requires registered predatory offenders to report changes in their required registration information.<\/p>\n

Under Minnesota Statute 243.166<\/a>, individuals without a primary address must comply with specific reporting requirements.<\/p>\n

Those requirements include registering with the appropriate law enforcement authority within 24 hours after losing a primary address.<\/p>\n

Registration records must also include required vehicle and telephone information.<\/p>\n

Denio is charged with one felony count of knowingly failing to comply with registration requirements.<\/p>\n

A conviction carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hubbard County Court Case<\/h2>\n

The complaint also references previous convictions involving predatory offender registration violations.<\/p>\n

Those earlier convictions are separate from the current allegation.<\/p>\n

The new case is filed in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District under court file number 29-CR-26-970<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The criminal complaint lists an order of detention.<\/p>\n

The current charge concerns alleged registration noncompliance, not a newly alleged sexual offense.<\/p>\n

The allegations have not been proven in court. Denio is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.<\/p>\n
