Zona Gayle \u201cZonie\u201d Walker Easton was born to William and Lillian (nee Behrenfeld) Walker on October 29, 1935 in Mott, North Dakota. She passed away September 21, 2026 at the Benedictine Living Community in Osseo, Minnesota. She grew up and was educated in Mott and Bismarck. She attended the college of St. Theresa in Winona, Minnesota. Zonie married Theodore \u201cAlex \u201cEaston in 1956 in Bismarck. She taught until she started a family.<\/p>\n

Zonie and Alex moved relatively often for jobs and educational opportunities. They became residents of towns in North Dakota, Washington, Wyoming, Texas, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Colorado, and Minnesota (Thief River Falls, Fergus Falls, and Edina). Zonie made lifelong friends in every new community she joined, as she was an organizer of, and enthusiastic participator in, parish, school, and community events. She and Alex divorced in the late 1980s, but they eventually renewed a friendly connection before his death in 2020.<\/p>\n

After raising her family, Zonie returned to Bemidji State University to complete her B.A. in Elementary Education and then taught in four Minnesota communities, mostly in parochial schools. She liked to share cute stories about her \u201ckids.\u201d She helped many children acquire the skill of reading, and in semi-retirement expressed a fondness for substitute teaching in middle school, a sure display of her extreme patience and generosity. Zonie was a devout Catholic and was a member of Christ the King parish in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

Zonie enjoyed reading, art, music, movies, traveling, and decorating. She cultivated a unique and lovely personal style in all her outfits and her homes. Her favorite thing was hosting friends and family for meals and parties. She had a habit of pointing to special things with her right pinkie finger. She used it to gently point out her grandchildren\u2019s faces in a photo, to an unusual detail in a painting, or to a petal on her favorite fresh-cut garden flowers. Maybe it started because of her daily hot tea ritual, or maybe she was pointing to the heaven she faithfully believed in.<\/p>\n

Zonie is survived by four children: Lili Jo (Mark) Sjomeling, Lead, South Dakota, Steve (Marivern) Easton, Fort Collins, Colorado, Julie (Jeff) Oseid, Minneapolis and Wendy Easton, St. Paul, her grandchildren: Kelsey (Nick) Wojciak, Minneapolis, Gaylemarie Easton (Harley), Orlando, Florida, Danny Oseid, Minneapolis, Tedder Easton, Laramie, Wyoming, Olivia Oseid, Minneapolis and Nathaniel (Kristin) Easton, Ridgefield, Connecticut, one great-grandson Aiden Oseid Wojciak, sister Dorothy Walker (Jim Mowbray), and brother-in-law Dennis Doppler. She is also survived by her cherished nieces and nephews and their families, and many special friends.<\/p>\n

Zonie was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Robert James Walker, Frances Reinehr, Wanda Walker, Sister Mary Walker, Billy Jack Walker and David Walker, granddaughter Gabrielle Easton, and her nephew Danny Reinehr and niece Dede Carpenter.<\/p>\n

Memorials preferred to Christ the King Catholic church.<\/p>\n

Services will be held on Friday, October 23 at Christ the King, 5029 Zenith Avenue South, Minneapolis with the rosary at 9:40 a.m., visitation from 10-11 a.m., and funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Lunch to follow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
