Thief River Falls Man Sentenced in Check Theft Case<\/h2>\n

Thief River Falls<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 Shawn Dale Armstrong, 57, has been sentenced for felony check forgery and mail theft.<\/p>\n

Armstrong received a five-year stay of imposition on the check forgery conviction.<\/p>\n

The sentence was imposed under Minnesota law.<\/p>\n

He must serve 30 days on electronic home monitoring.<\/p>\n

Armstrong will also serve five years of supervised probation.<\/p>\n

He was ordered to complete a comprehensive assessment within 60 days.<\/p>\n

He must follow any recommended treatment and aftercare.<\/p>\n

Armstrong cannot possess firearms, ammunition or explosives while on probation.<\/p>\n

He must also provide a DNA sample and pay $260 in fees and fines.<\/p>\n

Mail Theft Sentence Runs at Same Time<\/h2>\n

For the mail theft conviction, Armstrong received another 30 days of electronic monitoring.<\/p>\n

That sentence will run at the same time as the forgery sentence.<\/p>\n

He also received three years of supervised probation on that charge.<\/p>\n

Armstrong was ordered to pay an additional $100 fee.<\/p>\n

Two other charges were dismissed.<\/p>\n

They involved offering a forged check and possessing or selling a stolen check.<\/p>\n

Case Involved $450 Court Check<\/h2>\n

The case began after authorities learned about a $450 check issued by Pennington County District Court.<\/p>\n

The check had been mailed to a woman at an old address.<\/p>\n

Armstrong was still living at that address, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

The woman contacted court administration after learning the check had been sent there.<\/p>\n

The original check was later voided.<\/p>\n

Investigators determined the check had been deposited at a bank in Warren.<\/p>\n

A second man told investigators that Armstrong gave him the check to deposit.<\/p>\n

The man said he later gave the money to Armstrong.<\/p>\n

Surveillance and Records Reviewed<\/h2>\n

Investigators reviewed bank records and surveillance footage from several businesses.<\/p>\n

Records showed a $450 deposit and a $500 withdrawal on November 26.<\/p>\n

Surveillance later showed Armstrong paying $440 in cash for propane at Cenex.<\/p>\n

Armstrong initially denied cashing or providing the check, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

During a later interview, his account changed.<\/p>\n

Authorities said Armstrong eventually admitted forging the woman’s name on the check.<\/p>\n

He also admitted opening the court mail containing the check.<\/p>\n
