James Allen Sagstuen, 61, of rural Newfolden, Minnesota, passed away on September 18, 2026, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.<\/p>\n

A gathering time for family and friends will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, MN.<\/p>\n

The funeral to celebrate James\u2019 life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 25, 2026 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, MN. Burial will follow at the Holt Cemetery.<\/p>\n

James, well known as Jamie, was born on February 5, 1965, in Grand Forks, ND, to Raymond and Marles (Peterson) Sagstuen. He was baptized at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. He spent his early years in Grand Forks, where he attended school at Lewis & Clark Elementary School. The family later moved to a farm just outside Newfolden, where Jamie was confirmed at Nazareth Lutheran Church, and later graduated from Marshall County Central in 1983.<\/p>\n

In 1987, Jamie was united in marriage to Koni (Koropatnicki) Johnson. Together, they welcomed two sons, Ryan and Nathan, who were the greatest blessings of his life. They made their home in Warroad, MN, where Jamie worked for Marvin Windows and served as a volunteer firefighter. They later moved to the family homestead in Newfolden, MN, where Jamie went on to work at Arctic Cat and Davidson Construction. The farm remained Jamie\u2019s home for the remainder of his life and held a special place in his heart.<\/p>\n

For the past 16 years Jamie spent countless hours volunteering for his church and community. Whether he was helping flip lefse or peel potatoes for a church meal, teaching confirmation to many classes of students over the years, or simply helping a friend or family member in a time of need, Jamie was always willing to lend a hand. He genuinely enjoyed serving others and had a true servant\u2019s heart. He never needed recognition for the things he did; helping others was simply who he was.<\/p>\n

Jamie enjoyed woodworking throughout the years and taking leisurely drives down country roads. Many mornings were spent visiting with friends over coffee and cards at the Newfolden caf\u00e9. He loved going to dirt track races, a tradition he enjoyed from the time his boys were little. Hockey was another favorite, and he enjoyed every opportunity to watch his children play, take in a local game, or settle in to watch a game on TV. One of his most treasured traditions was the annual deer hunting week spent with his boys, brother-in-law, and nephews, creating memories and stories that will be remembered for years to come.<\/p>\n

Jamie was also known for his quick wit and mischievous, sometimes wonderfully inappropriate, sense of humor. His jokes and unfiltered comments kept family and friends laughing, often catching people off guard. Those who knew him best will remember not only his kindness and devotion to his family, but also the laughter, fun, and personality he brought to every gathering.<\/p>\n

Family meant everything to Jamie. He was a proud father and grandfather who treasured his children, his two daughters-in-law, and his grandchildren. He loved spending time with them.<\/p>\n

Jamie is survived by his sons, Ryan (Roberta) Sagstuen and Nathan (Elizabeth Gerhart) Sagstuen; grandchildren, Norah, Emily, Madalyn, Rylie, Karsen, and Anders Sagstuen; siblings, Renae (David) Myers, Mardell (Jerry) Humble, Gary (Lynette) Sagstuen, and Julie Norman; other family, Danielle, Shyne, and Leon Hemmestvedt; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.<\/p>\n

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Marles Sagstuen, his brother-in-law, Lee Norman; and Jorde Hemmestvedt.<\/p>\n

James will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.<\/p>\n
