Police Respond to Sidewalk Fight<\/h2>\n
Bemidji police responded around 2:30 a.m. to a reported fight between a man and woman.<\/p>\n
Officers found a woman identified in court records as I.N. standing on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n
I.N. told investigators that Norton is her brother.<\/p>\n
She said they had been together at a bar before arguing about their late mother.<\/p>\n
I.N. alleged Norton tried to hit her first, but she ducked.<\/p>\n
She said Norton then struck her three times.<\/p>\n
I.N. also alleged Norton kept pushing her down when she tried to stand.<\/p>\n
She acknowledged hitting Norton, but said she did so after he struck her.<\/p>\n Investigators reported seeing blood near the left side of I.N.’s face.<\/p>\n They also observed blood on her back and clothing.<\/p>\n The complaint says I.N. reported pain in the back of her head.<\/p>\n Police documented dried blood in her hair and a cut on the back of her head.<\/p>\n Officers also photographed blood on the sidewalk where the altercation allegedly happened.<\/p>\n An ambulance was requested because of possible head trauma.<\/p>\n I.N. declined medical treatment, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n Police located Norton near Paul Bunyan Park shortly after the reported fight.<\/p>\n Norton said he and his sister had argued and that she punched him.<\/p>\n An officer reported seeing a bump forming near Norton’s right eyebrow.<\/p>\n Norton later said he allowed his sister to beat him up.<\/p>\n He also said he did not know how I.N. had been injured.<\/p>\n A witness told police both people were yelling before the dispute became physical.<\/p>\n The witness reported seeing I.N. fall after Norton struck her.<\/p>\n However, the witness said they did not see the entire confrontation.<\/p>\n Prosecutors charged Norton under Minnesota Statute 609.2242<\/a>.<\/p>\n The complaint says Norton has four prior qualified domestic violence-related offense convictions.<\/p>\n Those convictions fall within the ten-year period cited by prosecutors.<\/p>\n That history is used to support the felony level of the current charge.<\/p>\n The maximum penalty is five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.<\/p>\n The case is State of Minnesota v.
