Walker Dollar General Worker Charged in $1,676 Theft<\/h2>\n

Walker<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A Laporte woman faces a felony theft charge involving a Walker Dollar General store.<\/p>\n

Darien Rose Smith, 24, is charged with felony theft in Cass County District Court.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors allege Smith took or improperly discounted more than $1,600 in store merchandise.<\/p>\n

The case stems from an investigation reported on March 2, 2026.<\/p>\n

Police Called To Walker Dollar General<\/h2>\n

Police responded around 4:53 p.m. to the Dollar General at 815 Minnesota Avenue.<\/p>\n

The call concerned allegations that an employee had been stealing merchandise from the store.<\/p>\n

Store manager Anthony Johnson met with police when they arrived.<\/p>\n

Johnson provided investigators with a letter signed by Smith, according to the criminal complaint.<\/p>\n

The letter stated that Smith had taken about $1,676.80 worth of merchandise while working.<\/p>\n

Police then spoke with Smith about the allegations.<\/p>\n

She was advised of her Miranda rights before discussing the case, the complaint states.<\/p>\n

Complaint Says Smith Admitted Taking Items<\/h2>\n

According to prosecutors, Smith acknowledged taking the merchandise listed by the store.<\/p>\n

She allegedly described several methods used while she was employed there.<\/p>\n

Smith said she reduced prices on merchandise for herself and friends, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

She also allegedly admitted hiding merchandise beneath her clothing and leaving with the items.<\/p>\n

Smith agreed with the reported loss amount of $1,676.80, prosecutors say.<\/p>\n

She allegedly told investigators that additional merchandise had also been taken.<\/p>\n

However, Smith said she did not know the value of those additional items.<\/p>\n

The complaint says Smith reported that the activity began around October.<\/p>\n

Felony Theft Charge Filed<\/h2>\n

Prosecutors charged Smith with taking movable property without the owner’s consent.<\/p>\n

The felony level applies because the alleged value exceeded $1,000.<\/p>\n

The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.<\/p>\n

It also carries a possible fine of up to $10,000.<\/p>\n

The case is filed as Cass County court file 11-CR-26-613.<\/p>\n
