Cass Lake Man Faces Felony Domestic Assault Charge<\/h2>\n

Cass Lake<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A Cass Lake man faces a felony domestic assault charge following a June incident.<\/p>\n

Kyle Lee Whitebird, 39, is charged in Cass County District Court.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors allege Whitebird assaulted a woman with whom he shares a child.<\/p>\n

The alleged incident happened shortly after midnight on June 19, 2026.<\/p>\n

Argument Reported During Bonfire<\/h2>\n

Law enforcement responded around 12:49 a.m. to a reported fight at a Cass Lake residence.<\/p>\n

The woman told investigators that she and Whitebird had been attending a bonfire with other people.<\/p>\n

She said an argument began between them and later became more heated.<\/p>\n

The woman went inside the residence to separate herself from Whitebird, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors allege Whitebird followed her inside and continued yelling.<\/p>\n

The woman said Whitebird grabbed her wrist as she tried to leave.<\/p>\n

She alleged he then lifted her by the backpack she was wearing.<\/p>\n

Whitebird allegedly pushed her to the ground near a set of stairs.<\/p>\n

The woman reported landing on her back and experiencing pain in her shoulder.<\/p>\n

Witness Reports Seeing Push<\/h2>\n

Investigators also spoke with people who were at the residence.<\/p>\n

One witness said he heard Whitebird and the woman arguing inside the home.<\/p>\n

The witness reported hearing a door slam before seeing Whitebird push the woman.<\/p>\n

Another witness said yelling could be heard from inside the residence.<\/p>\n

That person did not report seeing the physical encounter.<\/p>\n

Deputies attempted to locate Whitebird after the report.<\/p>\n

The complaint says he had already left the area.<\/p>\n

Prior Convictions Cited In Felony Charge<\/h2>\n

Prosecutors charged Whitebird with felony domestic assault under Minnesota law.<\/p>\n

The felony level is based on prior qualifying domestic violence-related convictions.<\/p>\n

The complaint cites a 2023 felony conviction for violating an order for protection.<\/p>\n

It also cites a 2022 gross misdemeanor harassment conviction.<\/p>\n

The current charge carries up to five years in prison.<\/p>\n
