{"id":44161,"date":"2026-08-19T13:45:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T18:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trfnews.i234.me\/wordpress\/?p=44161"},"modified":"2026-08-15T19:12:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T00:12:09","slug":"remer-man-faces-16-felony-firearm-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trfnews.i234.me\/wordpress\/remer-man-faces-16-felony-firearm-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Remer Man Faces 16 Felony Firearm Charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<h2>Remer Man Faces 16 Felony Firearm Charges<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Remer<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/trfnews.i234.me\">trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A Remer man faces 16 felony firearm possession charges in Cass County.<\/p>\n<p>James Lewis Nelson, 71, is accused of possessing firearms while legally prohibited from doing so.<\/p>\n<p>Each count involves a different firearm allegedly found during a Cass County investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The case is filed in Cass County District Court as 11-CR-26-906.<\/p>\n<h2>Burglary Investigation Leads To Nelson<\/h2>\n<p>The investigation began after a property owner reported a possible burglary near Boy River.<\/p>\n<p>The owner reported missing property, including condensers and a trailer, according to the criminal complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators later contacted a recycling business in Deer River.<\/p>\n<p>The business reported that Nelson had recently sold several condensers and other scrap there.<\/p>\n<p>The payment totaled $357.06, according to court records.<\/p>\n<p>The property owner identified markings on the condensers as markings he had made himself.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson later denied taking anything from the property.<\/p>\n<h2>Investigators Report Finding 16 Firearms<\/h2>\n<p>Investigators went to Nelson&#8217;s Remer-area residence on March 10, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson allowed law enforcement to look through several buildings on the property, the complaint states.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators eventually found several long-gun cases inside a detached garage.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint says 15 cases contained a total of 16 firearms.<\/p>\n<p>One Remington Model 700 resembled a firearm listed among the property owner&#8217;s missing items.<\/p>\n<p>Dispatch then advised investigators that Nelson was prohibited from possessing firearms.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson told investigators the guns belonged to his wife, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n<p>He also claimed a former sheriff previously told him firearms could remain on the property.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators later contacted that retired sheriff.<\/p>\n<p>The former sheriff denied ever telling Nelson that he could possess firearms.<\/p>\n<h2>Sixteen Felony Counts Filed<\/h2>\n<p>The seized guns included Ruger, Savage, Marlin, Mossberg, Stevens, Winchester, and Remington models.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors filed one felony possession count for each of the 16 firearms.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint cites Nelson&#8217;s 2011 felony convictions as the basis for his firearm prohibition.<\/p>\n<p>Those convictions included burglary, firearm theft, stolen property, and ineligible firearm possession offenses.<\/p>\n<p>Each new count carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Each count also carries a possible fine of up to $30,000.<\/p>\n<p>Readers can review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.revisor.mn.gov\/statutes\/cite\/624.713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota Statute 624.713<\/a> for firearm possession restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Additional court information is available through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mncourts.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota Judicial Branch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m Adrian Cole reporting for <a href=\"https:\/\/trfnews.i234.me\">TRF News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Copyright 2026 TRF News.
