Fargo Man Dies After Fleeing Stop, Hitting Tree<\/h2>\n

FARGO (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>)<\/strong> \u2014 A 35-year-old Fargo man died early Saturday after his pickup crashed into a tree on Dakota Drive.<\/p>\n

The North Dakota State Highway Patrol<\/a> identified the driver as Damion Proffit, 35, of Fargo.<\/p>\n

The crash happened during the early morning hours of August 8.<\/p>\n

Traffic Stop Ends Before Crash<\/h2>\n

Police tried to stop Proffit at about 12:18 a.m.<\/p>\n

The attempted stop began in the 700 block of Broadway North.<\/p>\n

Authorities said Proffit was driving while his license was suspended.<\/p>\n

Proffit left the area at a high rate of speed.<\/p>\n

Officers then ended the attempted stop. Police did not pursue the pickup.<\/p>\n

Shortly afterward, a Fargo police officer found the crashed vehicle.<\/p>\n

The wreck was in the 1500 block of Dakota Drive.<\/p>\n

Pickup Hits Tree<\/h2>\n

Investigators said the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado failed to make a curve.<\/p>\n

The pickup then struck a tree. It continued moving and traveled between two apartment buildings.<\/p>\n

Debris from the crash also struck a parked Honda Element.<\/p>\n

No one was inside the Honda at the time.<\/p>\n

Authorities said the parked vehicle suffered extensive damage.<\/p>\n

Proffit died at the scene from injuries caused by the crash.<\/p>\n

No other injuries were reported in the information released.<\/p>\n

Crash Remains Under Investigation<\/h2>\n

Emergency crews from several agencies responded to the scene.<\/p>\n

Those agencies included the Fargo Police Department<\/a> and Fargo Fire Department.<\/p>\n

Sanford Ambulance also responded.<\/p>\n

The North Dakota State Highway Patrol is leading the crash investigation.<\/p>\n

Investigators have not released a final cause for the crash.<\/p>\n

The case remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

Additional details could be released after investigators complete their work.<\/p>\n

Drivers can find traffic safety information through the North Dakota State Highway Patrol.<\/p>\n

Fargo Police also provides public safety information and local department updates online.<\/p>\n

The crash happened only minutes after the attempted traffic stop.<\/p>\n

However, officers had already ended the stop before the crash was discovered.<\/p>\n
