Colfax<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 Daniel Wayne Dockter has been sentenced in a major cattle theft case.<\/p>\n

The Colfax man pleaded guilty Thursday in Richland County to four criminal counts.<\/p>\n

The charges involved more than 130 cattle valued at about $650,000.<\/p>\n

Dockter received two years in prison and must pay $341,000 in restitution.<\/p>\n

Four Counts Filed in the Case<\/h2>\n

Dockter pleaded guilty to two Class A felony theft counts.<\/p>\n

Each felony involved property valued above $50,000.<\/p>\n

He also pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor livestock transport charges.<\/p>\n

The charges involved moving livestock across state lines without required records.<\/p>\n

Prison, Probation, and Restitution<\/h2>\n

Dockter received a 10-year sentence on the main theft count.<\/p>\n

Eight years of that sentence were suspended.<\/p>\n

He will serve two years before beginning three years of supervised probation.<\/p>\n

The court ordered $241,000 in restitution for the first theft count.<\/p>\n

Another $100,000 was ordered for the second theft count.<\/p>\n

The combined restitution total is $341,000.<\/p>\n

Dockter was ordered to report to state corrections officials by noon Friday.<\/p>\n

Ranchers Reported Missing Cattle<\/h2>\n

The case involved two ranchers who trusted Dockter to care for their livestock.<\/p>\n

One rancher sent 93 cows and three bulls to Dockter\u2019s property in November 2019.<\/p>\n

A second rancher sent 40 cows to the property in 2021.<\/p>\n

The cattle later disappeared from Dockter\u2019s Richland County operation.<\/p>\n

According to investigators, Dockter said the animals were at a South Dakota feedlot.<\/p>\n

He identified the location as \u201cRedfords Feedlot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Investigators found no business operating under that name.<\/p>\n

Search Found Other Cattle<\/h2>\n

Investigators found no brand inspection records showing legal transport outside North Dakota.<\/p>\n

Authorities searched Dockter\u2019s property in January 2026.<\/p>\n

They found 165 cattle during the search.<\/p>\n

None belonged to either rancher involved in the criminal case.<\/p>\n
