The multistate settlement targets how Menards advertised its well-known \u201c11% Rebate Program.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said Minnesota will receive about $632,000 from the deal.<\/p>\n

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said Wisconsin\u2019s share totals $750,000.<\/p>\n

What states say happened<\/h2>\n

Investigators said some online prices appeared to be \u201cafter rebate,\u201d not the checkout price.<\/p>\n

They also said key limits were not clear to many shoppers.<\/p>\n

States said some purchases did not qualify for the rebate program.<\/p>\n

Examples included gift cards, event tickets, rentals, and propane deliveries.<\/p>\n

Officials also said Menards sometimes directed customers to Rebates International for help.<\/p>\n

Pandemic price claims<\/h2>\n

Wisconsin officials also pointed to pandemic-era price gouging claims.<\/p>\n

They said two Wisconsin stores raised prices on four-gallon water bottles during an emergency period.<\/p>\n

Ellison criticized any pandemic pricing that took advantage of fear and uncertainty.<\/p>\n

What changes under the settlement<\/h2>\n

Under the agreement, Menards must avoid marketing the 11% offer like an instant discount.<\/p>\n

The company must also better explain the limits on what qualifies for the rebate.<\/p>\n

States said Menards has already removed certain online price differences tied to the rebate display.<\/p>\n

The settlement also gives shoppers up to one year to submit rebate forms.<\/p>\n

Officials said Menards will also review options for online rebate submission in the future.<\/p>\n

Company response<\/h2>\n

Menards did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement.<\/p>\n
