Hallock Murder Case Ends With 15-Year Sentence<\/h2>\n

HALLOCK, Minn.<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 Jordan Hanson was sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing Justin Esparza.<\/p>\n

A Kittson County judge sentenced Hanson to 180 months on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.<\/p>\n

The sentence follows Esparza\u2019s shooting death inside his Hallock home on March 13, 2025.<\/p>\n

Guilty Plea Entered in May<\/h2>\n

Hanson pleaded guilty on May 28, 2026, to second-degree felony murder.<\/p>\n

The plea resolved the case more than one year after Esparza was killed.<\/p>\n

The Minnesota Attorney General\u2019s Office<\/a> handled the prosecution after a county referral.<\/p>\n

Attorney General Keith Ellison\u2019s office announced the conviction before Hanson\u2019s sentencing.<\/p>\n

Shooting Happened Inside Hallock Home<\/h2>\n

Prosecutors said Hanson shot Esparza in the head using a handgun that belonged to him.<\/p>\n

They said Hanson then left the home in Esparza\u2019s truck.<\/p>\n

State Prosecutors Joined the Case<\/h2>\n

Ellison\u2019s office joined the case after a referral from Kittson County Attorney Robert Albrecht.<\/p>\n

Minnesota law<\/a> allows the attorney general to assist when a county attorney requests help.<\/p>\n

The Attorney General\u2019s Office usually handles civil matters, not local criminal prosecutions.<\/p>\n

The referral allowed state prosecutors to work with county officials throughout the murder case.<\/p>\n

Several Agencies Investigated<\/h2>\n

The case involved several law enforcement agencies across Kittson County and Minnesota.<\/p>\n

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension<\/a> helped investigate the shooting.<\/p>\n

The Kittson County Sheriff\u2019s Office and Hallock Police Department also worked on the case.<\/p>\n
