Born on August 6, 1944, in Bagley, Julie\u2019s life was marked by kindness, generosity, and a passionate commitment to those around her.<br \/>\nA proud graduate of Gonvick High School in 1962, Julie pursued higher education at Bemidji State University, where she earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in business in 1967. Shortly after college, she began her teaching career at Inver Grove Heights High School. In 1970, she moved to Thief River Falls and continued her career at the Area Vocational Technical Institute (AVTI), where she taught in the Legal Secretarial Program. AVTI later transitioned to Northland Community and Technical College, where Julie continued to inspire students until her retirement in 2001. Her dedication to education was recognized through receiving Teacher of the Year 1995-1996 at Northland, reflecting the profound impact she had on countless students.<br \/>\nJulie married Howard Thorson on January 4, 1969, at Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick. Together, they built a life centered on love and community. Julie\u2019s personality shone brightly through her kindness, welcoming spirit, and genuine joy in helping others. She loved being surrounded by those she cared about, generously sharing her time and kindness while embracing the many interests and pursuits that brought her happiness.<br \/>\nAmong her many interests were baking, hosting gatherings, reading, traveling, quilting, fishing, and supporting Prowler athletics. Julie was a vibrant member of numerous organizations, including the Thief River Falls Zehlians, AAUW, Trinity Church Choir, and Trinity Lutheran Church, where her presence enriched the lives of many. Julie also served as secretary for the board of directors for Northland Community and Technical College.<br \/>\nJulie\u2019s family was the heart of her world. She is survived by her beloved husband, Howard; children, Corey (Ivy) Thorson of Minot, and Maren (Adam) Krueger of Fargo; and her treasured grandchildren, Grant, Tait, Elle, Ava, Maya, and Alex. She also leaves behind a loving brother, Gary (Evon) Quern; brothers-in-law, Bruce Thorson and Stuart (Merry) Thorson; as well as several nieces and nephews. Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Evelyn Quern; sister, Linda Shelquist; in-laws, Thor and Inez Thorson; and sister-in-law, Nancy Thorson.<br \/>\nThroughout her life, Julie spoke fondly of her friends and colleagues, expressing a true appreciation for the relationships she formed. She genuinely enjoyed being an active participant in community activities and found joy in sharing these moments with others.<br \/>\nServices to honor and celebrate Julie\u2019s life will begin with a visitation on June 11, 2026, from 5-7 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls. A prayer service will follow on the same evening at 6:30 p.m. The next day, June 12, 2026, visitation will resume from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 325 Horace Avenue North in Thief River Falls, followed by the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick.<br \/>\nThe family would like to give special thanks to the following: Dr. Cheryl White, HIA Hospice, and friends and neighbors who provided help and support for Julie and Howard.<br \/>\nCondolences may be sent at www.johnsonfuneralservice.com<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thief River Falls \u2013 Julie Thorson passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, in Thief River Falls.
