Boomgaarden, 44, of Vergas, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court.

Boomgaarden was sentenced for felony fifth-degree drug possession and gross misdemeanor third-degree DWI.

According to court records, the case began shortly after midnight on Oct. 2, 2025. A Becker County deputy was sent to help a driver in Detroit Lakes. The driver reported being followed by an unknown vehicle.

The driver was in a black Toyota Camry. Court records say a silver Lincoln Town Car was following it through the city.

The deputy waited outside the Becker County Sheriff’s Office. The Camry stopped on Frazee Street. The Lincoln also stopped nearby.

The deputy directed the Camry under the sheriff’s office canopy. The Lincoln slowly followed behind it.

Driver Stopped Outside Sheriff’s Office

The deputy used a flashlight to get the Lincoln to stop. The driver was then identified as Boomgaarden.

According to court records, the deputy noticed signs of possible impairment. Boomgaarden’s pupils were described as very large. His eyes were also described as glossy.

The deputy asked Boomgaarden about following the Camry. Court records say the deputy mentioned 10 turns. Boomgaarden said he followed the vehicle for about three turns.

When asked to leave the vehicle, Boomgaarden first refused. He later got out of the Lincoln.

At one point, Boomgaarden said he was on methadone. He denied using methamphetamine and heroin. He admitted to smoking marijuana the day before.

Suspected Drugs Found During Search

Court records say Boomgaarden performed poorly on field sobriety tests. He was arrested on suspicion of DWI.

During a search, the deputy found a ziplock baggie in Boomgaarden’s front pocket. It contained suspected psychedelic mushrooms.

The substance weighed about 3.14 grams with packaging, according to court records.

Boomgaarden allegedly said he “didn’t even do them.”

Deputies also searched his vehicle. They found a pill bottle with unknown pills. They also found a marijuana grinder and THC vapes.

Court records say deputies found a green notebook with Boomgaarden’s name on it. The notebook listed prices for several narcotics.

A blood sample was sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for testing.

Court records also show Boomgaarden had a prior DWI conviction in 2023.

Sentence Issued In Becker County

On April 14, District Judge Michelle Lawson issued a stay of adjudication on the felony drug charge.

If Boomgaarden completes probation, that drug charge may be dismissed.

On the DWI charge, Boomgaarden was ordered to serve 15 days in jail. He received credit for four days already served.

He was also fined $1,000. He must pay another $190 in court fees.

Boomgaarden was ordered not to drink alcohol or use drugs. He must complete a comprehensive assessment. He must also follow all recommendations, including aftercare.

He was ordered to complete cognitive skill training. He must also follow cognitive behavioral programming as directed.

Boomgaarden was placed on supervised probation for five years.

More information about Minnesota court records is available through the Minnesota Judicial Branch.
