Frazee Man Charged In $18K Check Forgery Case<\/h2>\n

Becker County<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A Frazee man is facing felony charges after a tree service owner reported about $18,000 in forged checks, according to a criminal complaint filed in Becker County District Court.<\/p>\n

Brandin Wassather, of Frazee, is charged with felony theft by swindling and felony check forgery. The case is filed in Minnesota\u2019s 7th Judicial District under court file number 03-CR-26-610.<\/p>\n

The charges cover alleged conduct from September 2025 through November 2025. Prosecutors allege Wassather helped obtain money through forged checks tied to a tree service business account.<\/p>\n

Business Owner Reported Missing Checks<\/h2>\n

According to the complaint, the business owner told investigators he ordered checkbooks but never received them. He believed the checks may have been taken from his mailbox or vehicle.<\/p>\n

The owner reported several forged checks written on his business account. He said Dustin James Differding and Wassather had worked for his tree service. The owner said both men were paid in cash.<\/p>\n

The complaint states Differding later admitted to writing checks at bars. He allegedly said he wrote about $10,650 in fraudulent checks.<\/p>\n

Checks Allegedly Used At Banks And Bars<\/h2>\n

Court documents say forged checks were reviewed from several locations. They included checks to bars in Bejou, Winger, Ogema, and Detroit Lakes.<\/p>\n

The complaint also details checks deposited at United Community Bank locations in Perham and Frazee. Prosecutors allege Wassather deposited checks totaling $4,050 in Perham.<\/p>\n

They also allege he deposited checks totaling $6,600 at the Frazee bank. In several cases, Differding was allegedly seen in the passenger seat during drive-up deposits.<\/p>\n

Wassather told investigators he believed Differding had permission to write the checks, according to the complaint. He also said some checks were for Differding, who could not cash them due to a lack of identification.<\/p>\n

Investigators said two checks included deposit slips for Wassather. The complaint alleges the handwriting matched the name written on the checks.<\/p>\n

Felony Charges Filed<\/h2>\n

The theft-by-swindle charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison. It also carries a possible $20,000 fine.<\/p>\n

The check forgery charge carries penalties based on the amount involved. Minnesota\u2019s check forgery statute can be reviewed through the Minnesota Revisor of Statutes<\/a>.<\/p>\n
