East Grand Forks, Polk County<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A Crookston man is facing a felony charge after a vandalism report at an East Grand Forks campground.<\/p>\n

Curtis Wayne Kakaygeesick, 38, is charged in Polk County District Court with first-degree criminal damage to property.<\/p>\n

The charge follows damage reported on May 7 at the Red River State Recreation Area<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The court file lists the case as 60-CR-26-613.<\/p>\n

Vehicles Reported Damaged<\/h2>\n

According to the criminal complaint, S.V. and K.V. woke up and found damage to two vehicles.<\/p>\n

The complaint says their 2022 Subaru Ascent had scratches on the passenger side.<\/p>\n

It also had a large scratch on the front passenger window.<\/p>\n

The rear passenger tire was also punctured and flat.<\/p>\n

Their 2024 GMC Sierra also had a long scratch.<\/p>\n

The scratch ran from the rear box area to the front passenger door.<\/p>\n

Police said repair estimates later totaled more than $7,300.<\/p>\n

The complaint says the Sierra damage was estimated at $3,641.10.<\/p>\n

The Subaru Ascent damage was estimated at $3,708.60.<\/p>\n

Under Minnesota Statute 609.595<\/a>, the charge carries a maximum sentence of five years.<\/p>\n

It also carries a possible $10,000 fine, or both.<\/p>\n

Knife Found Near Campsite<\/h2>\n

A second camper, identified as J.T., also reported damage to his pickup.<\/p>\n

He told police his Dodge Ram had a broken mirror and two flat tires.<\/p>\n

He later reported cuts in the tire sidewalls.<\/p>\n

He also reported windshield damage and scratches on the cab.<\/p>\n

J.T. told police he found a knife near his campsite.<\/p>\n

The complaint says the knife had \u201cSharp Spot\u201d engraved on the blade.<\/p>\n

Police later found a matching leather knife sheath in a black Jeep Liberty.<\/p>\n

Suspect Located At Motel<\/h2>\n

Investigators said a black Jeep Liberty was linked to Kakaygeesick.<\/p>\n

The complaint says the vehicle was later found at the East Grand Inn Motel.<\/p>\n

Kakaygeesick allegedly admitted to being at the campground during the afternoon and early morning hours.<\/p>\n

He also allegedly told police he was drunk and \u201cpretty messed up\u201d that night.<\/p>\n

He did not admit to damaging the vehicles, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

However, police said he offered to pay restitution.<\/p>\n

A witness later identified Kakaygeesick as the man seen at the campground.<\/p>\n

The complaint also references prior convictions listed on Minnesota and North Dakota court<\/a> websites.<\/p>\n

A criminal complaint is only an accusation.<\/p>\n

Kakaygeesick is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.<\/p>\n
