Thief River Falls<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A Viking man is facing theft and DWI charges after an incident at Walmart in Thief River Falls.<\/p>\n

According to the complaint, police were called on May 1 at about 5:27 p.m. The report said an allegedly intoxicated man tried to leave Walmart in Thief River Falls<\/a> without paying for merchandise.<\/p>\n

Shawn Pierre Belland II, 37, of Viking, has been charged with theft. He has also been charged with third-degree DWI involving an alcohol concentration of 0.16 or greater. Minnesota\u2019s DWI laws are listed under Minnesota Statute 169A.26<\/a>. Theft laws are listed under Minnesota Statute 609.52<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Complaint Details Walmart Report<\/h2>\n

The complaint says a Walmart employee reported that Belland allegedly left the store with trading cards. The employee also reported that Belland allegedly touched a female employee in an improper way. He was also accused of running into people inside the store.<\/p>\n

The employee gave police a description of Belland and his pickup truck. When officers arrived, they allegedly found Belland sitting behind the wheel of the truck. The complaint says Belland had his vehicle keys. He allegedly told police he was about to go home.<\/p>\n

Trading Cards Allegedly Found<\/h2>\n

Belland denied stealing anything, according to the complaint. Police reported seeing a bottle of alcohol near the rear tire of his truck. Belland allegedly said the bottle did not belong to him.<\/p>\n

An officer also reported smelling alcohol coming from Belland. When asked if he bought trading cards from Walmart, Belland allegedly said no.<\/p>\n

The complaint says Belland then looked for cigarettes in the truck box. An officer allegedly saw wrapped trading cards inside the truck box. Other trading cards were also allegedly found inside the cab.<\/p>\n

Police later told Belland to gather the stolen items. The complaint says he then grabbed trading cards from the truck box.<\/p>\n

Preliminary Breath Test Reported<\/h2>\n

The complaint says Belland claimed he had last consumed alcohol a long time earlier. It also said he was not making sense.<\/p>\n

The complaint further noted that Belland had been arrested on suspicion of DWI two days earlier. A responding officer said that earlier case involved the same type of alcohol found near Belland\u2019s tire.<\/p>\n

Belland allegedly failed field sobriety tests. Police said he used vulgar language and yelled near families entering and leaving the business.<\/p>\n

A preliminary breath test allegedly showed a result of 0.18 BAC. In the booking room at the Law Enforcement Center, Belland allegedly made statements admitting to the Walmart theft.<\/p>\n

The complaint says 26 products were stolen. Their total value was listed at $713.85.<\/p>\n

Belland has been charged, but he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.<\/p>\n
