Dunseith<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 Fire crews continued battling several fires Sunday in the Turtle Mountain area near Dunseith and Belcourt.<\/p>\n

Fire officials said the fires had likely burned at least 2,000 acres by Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

About 100 firefighters from more than a dozen departments responded to the area.<\/p>\n

Dunseith Fire Chief Rick Gottbreht said the fires were about 50% contained. He said containment may be higher.<\/p>\n

Officials hope to know more about the damage in the coming days.<\/p>\n

Large Response Near Turtle Mountain<\/h2>\n

Turtle Mountain Tribal Chairman Jamie Azure said two large fires were burning on Sunday.<\/p>\n

One fire was north of Dunseith. Another was burning along BIA Road 8.<\/p>\n

Azure said several smaller fires were also burning in the area.<\/p>\n

Dunseith Fire is leading the response. Belcourt crews, the Forest Service, and other local departments are assisting.<\/p>\n

Departments from as far away as Burlington sent vehicles and crews to help.<\/p>\n

Residents who want to help firefighters may drop off water and food.<\/p>\n

Donations can be brought to the Dunseith Emergency Response Center at 515 Main Street.<\/p>\n

Burn Bans Remain In Place<\/h2>\n

Azure reminded the public that burn bans remain in effect.<\/p>\n

Anyone who sees burning in the area should report it to law enforcement or call 911.<\/p>\n

Residents are also asked to avoid smoky areas.<\/p>\n

Officials said extra traffic can block firefighters and emergency vehicles.<\/p>\n

Dry and windy weather has made fire conditions more dangerous across the region.<\/p>\n

Fire safety information is available from the National Weather Service fire weather page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wildfire safety tips are also available from Ready.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n

No Injuries Reported Sunday<\/h2>\n

As of Sunday afternoon, no injuries had been confirmed.<\/p>\n

Officials also had no confirmed reports of evacuations or structure damage near Dunseith and Belcourt.<\/p>\n

The Turtle Mountain fires came after a busy weekend for regional crews.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, an upset oil location flare started a fire near Tioga.<\/p>\n

That fire burned about 200 acres.<\/p>\n

Crews near Lansford also moved quickly on Sunday to control a grass fire.<\/p>\n

Officials said more updates are expected as fire crews assess the area.<\/p>\n
