Bemidji<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 Jessica Kay Mathison, 36, of Bemidji, is facing two gross misdemeanor charges in Beltrami County District Court.<\/p>\n

The charges stem from an April 23, 2026, report of shoplifting at Walmart in Bemidji. Court records list the case as 04-CR-26-936.<\/p>\n

Mathison is charged with giving a peace officer the false name of another person. She is also charged with theft of movable property.<\/p>\n

Both charges carry a maximum sentence of 364 days in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.<\/p>\n

Traffic Stop Followed Theft Report<\/h2>\n

According to the complaint, police were called at about 6:33 p.m. for a report of two female shoplifters.<\/p>\n

A Walmart asset protection worker told dispatch the suspects left in a Dodge Charger with a white hood.<\/p>\n

The vehicle was later stopped on Partnership Drive. Police said it had no license plates or registration.<\/p>\n

The driver was identified as Hope Degroat. A female passenger allegedly gave another person\u2019s name and date of birth.<\/p>\n

Investigators said the passenger claimed she did not have an ID. She also claimed she had nothing in her wallet showing her name.<\/p>\n

Complaint Says Identity Was Questioned<\/h2>\n

Police later found that the name given by the passenger did not match available records.<\/p>\n

The complaint says officers reviewed photos and continued checking the passenger\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

When questioned further, the passenger allegedly admitted she was Jessica Mathison.<\/p>\n

She also allegedly said she had warrants. Police confirmed outstanding warrants, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

Mathison was then taken to the Beltrami County Jail.<\/p>\n

More Than $500 In Merchandise Alleged<\/h2>\n

Police later contacted Walmart’s asset protection about the theft report.<\/p>\n

The complaint says both women were using self-checkout together.<\/p>\n

One woman allegedly used a handheld scanner. The other allegedly scanned items at the register.<\/p>\n

Asset protection reported that more than $500 in merchandise was missing.<\/p>\n

The complaint says both women passed all points of sale with unpaid items.<\/p>\n

The charges are allegations. Mathison is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.<\/p>\n
