Mahnomen<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A Mahnomen man is facing theft, vehicle tampering, and property damage charges after a reported garage theft.<\/p>\n

Percy Leonard French is charged in Mahnomen County District Court.<\/p>\n

The case is filed in Minnesota\u2019s 9th Judicial District under court file 44-CR-26-51.<\/p>\n

A summons was issued in the case, according to court records.<\/p>\n

Vehicle Reported Damaged<\/h2>\n

According to the complaint, law enforcement responded on January 16, 2026.<\/p>\n

The report came from the south garage at Riverland Apartments in Mahnomen County.<\/p>\n

Ashlea Bevins reported damage to her son\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n

The vehicle was registered to Christopher Vanwert Jr., according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

Bevins said a window had been broken.<\/p>\n

She also reported that new hunting waders, a radio, and taillights were missing.<\/p>\n

The complaint says the vehicle was broken down.<\/p>\n

The family had planned to have it towed elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Authorities observed that a small rear passenger-side window had been smashed.<\/p>\n

Items Taken From Vehicle<\/h2>\n

Bevins told authorities the chest waders were recently bought from Scheels.<\/p>\n

The complaint lists the value of the waders at $350.<\/p>\n

Christopher had recently installed a JVC radio.<\/p>\n

The radio was valued at about $165, according to court records.<\/p>\n

Christopher estimated the taillights cost between $85 and $120 each.<\/p>\n

The broken window also needed repair.<\/p>\n

Surveillance Video Cited<\/h2>\n

On January 22, authorities learned surveillance video had been located.<\/p>\n

The complaint says the incident happened on January 12, 2026.<\/p>\n

The video allegedly showed an older Ford Expedition entering the garage.<\/p>\n

The vehicle was parked next to the victim\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n

Two males were inside the Expedition, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

The driver allegedly stayed inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n

The passenger allegedly tampered with the victim\u2019s vehicle for about 12 minutes.<\/p>\n

The complaint says items were placed into the rear of the suspect vehicle.<\/p>\n

The Expedition began to leave, then backed up.<\/p>\n

The passenger then allegedly removed the taillights from the victim\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n

Charges Filed In Mahnomen County<\/h2>\n

Authorities later contacted Aaron Keezer, the registered owner of the Expedition.<\/p>\n

Keezer said he had sold the vehicle to French.<\/p>\n

Authorities later identified French as the driver, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

The suspect vehicle was later seen parked at French\u2019s residence.<\/p>\n

The theft charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 609.52<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The vehicle tampering charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 609.546<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The property damage charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 609.595<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The gross misdemeanor theft count carries up to 364 days in jail.<\/p>\n

It also carries a possible $3,000 fine, or both.<\/p>\n

The charges are only accusations at this stage.<\/p>\n

French is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.<\/p>\n
