Crookston<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A Crookston man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a first-degree sex crime involving a child under 13.<\/p>\n

G. Thomas Amiot<\/strong>, 82, was sentenced on Thursday, April 2. He received the minimum prison term required by law. He pleaded guilty to the felony charge in December.<\/p>\n

Court records said the abuse happened over several months in 2012 and 2013. The victim was a boy who was 11 or 12 years old at the time.<\/p>\n

Defense Asked for Lesser Sentence<\/h2>\n

Amiot\u2019s attorney, Alexander Reichert, asked the court for a lighter sentence. He filed a memo before the hearing.<\/p>\n

The defense asked the judge to stay the prison sentence. Reichert wanted Amiot placed on probation instead.<\/p>\n

The memo pointed to Amiot\u2019s age, poor health, and lack of criminal history. It also described past trauma, mental health treatment, and a suicide attempt in 2024.<\/p>\n

Reichert also wrote about Amiot\u2019s long history of charity work. He said Amiot helped fund a local youth center, bought vehicles for charity, and counseled people in need.<\/p>\n

The memo included letters and certificates that described years of service to others.<\/p>\n

Judge Denied Stayed Sentence<\/h2>\n

The judge denied the request for a stayed sentence. Amiot was ordered to serve prison time at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He was given credit for five days already served in local custody.<\/p>\n

After prison, Amiot will be on supervised release for 10 years. He must also register as a sex offender.<\/p>\n

He cannot have contact with the victim. He also cannot possess dangerous weapons. He must provide a DNA sample if asked.<\/p>\n

Release Date Listed for 2034<\/h2>\n

Minnesota uses a two-thirds rule for many prison sentences. That means a person usually serves about two-thirds in custody.<\/p>\n

The final third is often served on supervised release. That only applies if no new offenses happen in custody.<\/p>\n

In Amiot\u2019s case, that means he could be released after about eight years. According to the Minnesota Department of Corrections<\/a>, his expected release date is March 28, 2034.<\/p>\n
