Beltrami County<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) A Red Lake man is facing felony and gross misdemeanor charges after a crash in Beltrami County, according to a criminal complaint filed in Minnesota District Court<\/a>. Valen Vaughn Hughte<\/strong>, 34, was charged with first-degree DWI, alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more within two hours, and driving after cancellation as inimical to public safety. The charges are allegations only. The case is still pending in court.<\/p>\n

Charges Filed<\/h2>\n

Prosecutors say the case started with a March 21, 2026, crash near Irvine Avenue Northwest and Great Divide Road Northwest. The complaint says Hughte has a prior felony DWI conviction. That prior case raises the new DWI counts to first-degree charges. Under Minnesota DWI law<\/a>, first-degree DWI is a felony. The third count, driving after cancellation, is a gross misdemeanor under state law<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Court records list the case in Beltrami County District Court under file number 04-CR-26-694. The complaint also cites Minnesota\u2019s first-degree DWI statute<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Crash Details<\/h2>\n

According to the complaint, deputies were sent to the crash scene at about 8:50 p.m. They found a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the west ditch and in the trees. First responders were treating Hughte in the roadway, the complaint says.<\/p>\n

The complaint says Hughte had blood on his head and smelled strongly of alcohol. Authorities also reported that his driver\u2019s license had been canceled as inimical to public safety. Investigators said the Jeep was traveling south on Irvine Avenue. It allegedly left the road in a curve near Sinkhold Road Northwest. The vehicle then struck several trees before stopping.<\/p>\n

The complaint also says Hughte handed over vehicle keys, two Fireball whiskey bottles, and a purse belonging to the registered owner of the vehicle. A search warrant was later obtained for a blood or urine sample, according to the filing.<\/p>\n

Prior Record and Case Status<\/h2>\n

The complaint states Hughte was convicted of felony first-degree DWI on January 23, 2023. The filing also lists earlier convictions, including no-contact order violations, domestic assault offenses, and drug possession.<\/p>\n
