Callaway (trfnews.i234.me)<\/a><\/strong> Lucas John Peterson<\/strong>, 36, of Callaway, has been charged in Becker County District Court after a police chase and DWI investigation in Detroit Lakes.<\/p>\n

Peterson faces a felony count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle. He also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of third-degree DWI, according to the criminal complaint.<\/p>\n

Crash and Pursuit<\/h2>\n

Court records say the incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 5. Officers on duty near Detroit Lakes High School saw a vehicle go over a curb and into a snowbank on North Shore Drive.<\/p>\n

A squad vehicle moved toward the scene with emergency lights on. The vehicle then got out of the snowbank and turned north onto Roosevelt Avenue.<\/p>\n

According to the complaint, the driver sped up as officers followed. Dispatch was then told the vehicle was fleeing.<\/p>\n

The chase ended after the vehicle hit another snowbank in the roadway and got stuck.<\/p>\n

What Officers Found<\/h2>\n

Officers approached the vehicle and found Peterson in the front passenger seat, according to court records. The complaint says he was moving around inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Police removed Peterson from the vehicle. Officers reported that he smelled of alcohol. They also said his eyes were bloodshot and watery.<\/p>\n

An open bottle of Hennessy cognac was found on the front passenger floor, the complaint states.<\/p>\n

Peterson then took a field sobriety test. According to the complaint, he showed all clues of impairment.<\/p>\n

Peterson\u2019s Statement<\/h2>\n

Peterson told police that someone else had been driving. He claimed that person ran from the scene on foot.<\/p>\n

But the complaint says officers saw no one leave the vehicle. It also states the driver\u2019s door was blocked by snow and could not be opened. Officers also reported no footprints or other signs that someone had fled.<\/p>\n

Court Status<\/h2>\n

Peterson was arrested and taken to jail. After speaking with an attorney, he refused to provide a breath sample. He said he was not driving, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

Court records say Peterson later posted $300 cash bail and was released under standard conditions.<\/p>\n

His next court hearing is a settlement conference set for May 3. If there is no plea agreement, a jury trial is scheduled for May 9.<\/p>\n
