Grand Forks<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A former Grand Forks classroom specialist is now facing federal charges in a child exploitation case.<\/p>\n

Malaun Alan Dilante Nelson<\/strong>, 31, was charged in federal court with seven counts. The charges include receipt of child sexual abuse files, transfer of obscene material to minors under 16, sexual exploitation of a child, and four counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child.<\/p>\n

According to the federal indictment, prosecutors say Nelson tried to persuade four minors, ages 13, 13, 14, and 14, to produce explicit images or videos. The indictment also says a 15-year-old boy sent explicit files. Prosecutors say Nelson then received those files and shared obscene material with three minors.<\/p>\n

State Case Dropped After Federal Custody Move<\/h2>\n

Nelson had first been charged in state court. Those charges included use of a minor in a sexual performance and luring minors by computer. He pleaded not guilty in that case.<\/p>\n

Two days later, he was moved into federal custody. The state case was then dismissed. The federal case now moves forward in U.S. District Court.<\/p>\n

Initial Hearing Held<\/h2>\n

Nelson made his initial appearance and arraignment on Monday, March 23. He was appointed a federal public defender. A judge ordered him to remain in federal custody until the case is resolved.<\/p>\n

His trial is scheduled for May 12. Federal trial dates can change as cases move through court.<\/p>\n
