{"id":2249,"date":"2025-12-11T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T21:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trfnews.i234.me\/wordpress\/?p=2249"},"modified":"2025-12-11T05:56:41","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T11:56:41","slug":"bemidji-woman-charged-in-child-abuse-filthy-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trfnews.i234.me\/wordpress\/bemidji-woman-charged-in-child-abuse-filthy-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Bemidji Woman Charged in Child Abuse, Filthy Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bemidji (<a href=\"https:\/\/trfnews.i234.me\">trfnews.i234.me<\/a>)<\/strong> \u2014 A 65-year-old Bemidji woman is charged after deputies say a child was assaulted and kept in extreme filth inside a city home.<\/p>\n<p>According to a criminal complaint, <strong>Nell Christine Rearick<\/strong> now faces three counts in Beltrami County District Court.<\/p>\n<p>She is charged with child endangerment, contributing to the need for child protection services, and domestic assault.<\/p>\n<p>The case stems from a reported domestic assault on December 9 at a house on 1st Street East in Bemidji.<\/p>\n<h2>Deputies Respond to Child Assault Report<\/h2>\n<p>Beltrami County Sheriff\u2019s deputies went to the home after a report of domestic assault involving a child.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint says a deputy arrived and found Rearick crying.<\/p>\n<p>She reportedly told the deputy, \u201cI\u2019m sorry; I\u2019ve never gotten this mad and didn\u2019t mean to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rearick said the child had a scheduled therapy appointment, but did not want to attend.<\/p>\n<p>She told deputies the child talked back, and she slapped the girl across the face.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint says the girl then kicked toward Rearick.<\/p>\n<p>Rearick said she grabbed the child by the back of the hair and threw her to the kitchen floor.<\/p>\n<p>The child told deputies the assault caused pain and fear.<\/p>\n<p>She said the pain was worst when her hair was pulled and when she was thrown down.<\/p>\n<p>The girl also said she had lived at the home for several years.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Mugshot centered in the middle of the story --><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center; margin: 24px 0;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: 282px;\" src=\"https:\/\/trfnews.i234.me\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Nell-Christine-Rearick.png\" alt=\"Mugshot of Nell Christine Rearick\" width=\"306\" \/><\/div>\n<h2>Deputy Reports Extreme Unsanitary Conditions<\/h2>\n<p>Inside the house, the deputy reported what he called severe unsanitary conditions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the complaint, he saw a fresh pile of feces near the front door.<\/p>\n<p>He noted an overwhelming smell of urine and feces that made his sinuses burn.<\/p>\n<p>In the child\u2019s bedroom, he saw animal feces and several cats moving through the room.<\/p>\n<p>He also saw urine stains on the floors that again burned his sinuses and made his eyes water.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint says large amounts of black mold covered areas of the ceiling and walls.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy reported stains on the child\u2019s bed that looked like they came from bed bugs or mold.<\/p>\n<p>In another room, he saw a mound of cat feces soaked with urine.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote that his throat and lungs started to burn after about fifteen minutes inside.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy noted he does not have cat allergies and is not usually sensitive to smells.<\/p>\n<h2>Rearick Admits House \u201cWas Getting Bad\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Rearick was arrested and advised of her Miranda rights.<\/p>\n<p>According to the complaint, she admitted the home\u2019s condition \u201cwas getting bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She told deputies she expected law enforcement would come at some point.<\/p>\n<p>Rearick said she is not disabled and is able to clean the house.<\/p>\n<p>She also said she needs help from the child to keep the home clean.<\/p>\n<p>Rearick told investigators she is retired and does not work outside the home.<\/p>\n<p>The child was placed on a 72-hour protective hold with social services.<\/p>\n<p>Child protection workers will now review the case and the home conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Information on Minnesota child protection laws is available from the <a href=\"https:\/\/mn.gov\/dhs\/people-we-serve\/children-and-families\/services\/child-protection\/\">Minnesota Department of Human Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Possible Jail Time and Fines<\/h2>\n<p>Rearick faces possible jail time and fines if convicted on all counts.<\/p>\n<p>Each gross misdemeanor charge carries a maximum of 364 days in jail or a $3,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p>The misdemeanor domestic assault count carries up to 90 days in jail or a $1,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p>The case is filed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mncourts.gov\/Find-Courts\/Beltrami.aspx\">Beltrami County District Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Court dates will be set as the case moves forward.<\/p>\n<p>All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m Chris Harper reporting for <a href=\"https:\/\/trfnews.i234.me\">TRF News<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bemidji (trfnews.i234.me) \u2014 A 65-year-old Bemidji woman is charged after deputies say a child was assaulted and kept in extreme filth inside a city home.
