Grand Forks County (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>)<\/strong> \u2014 Authorities say a woman is dead after a hostage standoff in a Grand Forks apartment ended in an officer-involved shooting.<\/p>\n

Caller Reports Holding Man Hostage<\/h2>\n

According to a press release, dispatch received several calls on December 5.<\/p>\n

Officials say the caller was 47-year-old Alice Nesdahl<\/strong> of Grand Forks.<\/p>\n

She told dispatchers she was holding a man hostage inside an apartment.<\/p>\n

Deputies from the Grand Forks County Sheriff\u2019s Office went to help city officers.<\/p>\n

The location was an apartment building in Grand Forks.<\/p>\n

Deputies and officers found the unit believed to be involved in the incident.<\/p>\n

Deputies Stage In Hallway And Use Drone<\/h2>\n

Authorities say officers took positions in the hallway outside the apartment.<\/p>\n

They stayed several doors away from the unit.<\/p>\n

The goal was to protect the hostage if he tried to escape.<\/p>\n

It also allowed a quick response if things changed suddenly inside.<\/p>\n

Investigators say a drone was placed outside a unit’s window.<\/p>\n

The drone camera allowed officers to watch movement inside the apartment.<\/p>\n

Officials say the woman held an object in her hand during parts of the video.<\/p>\n

They say she appeared to move the object toward the hostage several times.<\/p>\n

Door Breached And Woman Shot<\/h2>\n

After seeing those actions, officers decided to go into the apartment.<\/p>\n

They kicked the door several times and forced it open.<\/p>\n

According to the release, a Grand Forks County deputy entered with other officers.<\/p>\n

Officials say the deputy saw Nesdahl raise a knife toward the hostage\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n

The deputy then fired four shots.<\/p>\n

Investigators say Nesdahl was hit several times.<\/p>\n

Officers moved the hostage out of the apartment after the shooting.<\/p>\n

Authorities say he was removed safely.<\/p>\n

Nesdahl was given medical aid at the scene.<\/p>\n

She was then taken to Altru Hospital<\/a> in Grand Forks.<\/p>\n

Officials say she was pronounced dead on December 6.<\/p>\n

Deputy Placed On Leave; Probe Continues<\/h2>\n

The press release states the involved deputy has been with the Sheriff\u2019s Office since 2025.<\/p>\n

The deputy\u2019s name has been released by authorities, but is not used here.<\/p>\n

Officials say the deputy is on standard administrative leave.<\/p>\n

That step is routine for shootings involving law enforcement.<\/p>\n

The shooting remains under review by several agencies.<\/p>\n

The Grand Forks County Sheriff\u2019s Office is conducting an internal review.<\/p>\n

The Grand Forks Police Department is also involved in the investigation.<\/p>\n

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the outside probe.<\/p>\n
