James Douglas Sargent<\/strong>, 51, of Mahnomen, is charged with Domestic Assault \u2014 Gross Misdemeanor \u2014 Subsequent Violation.<\/p>\n

What happened<\/h2>\n

According to the criminal complaint, deputies were sent at about 9:07 p.m. on Jan. 23, 2026.<\/p>\n

The call came from the 2200 block of College Road in Mahnomen.<\/p>\n

A deputy found Sargent and the caller in a hallway.<\/p>\n

The deputy separated them right away.<\/p>\n

The caller, listed as \u201cVictim 1,\u201d said Sargent threatened to kill them.<\/p>\n

Victim 1 also said Sargent made motions like he would stab them.<\/p>\n

Victim 1 told deputies they feared for their safety.<\/p>\n

Victim 1 described Sargent as unstable.<\/p>\n

Deputies interviewed Sargent at the scene.<\/p>\n

The complaint says he admitted to making the threats during a verbal argument.<\/p>\n

Sargent told deputies he was upset after a recent death in his family.<\/p>\n

He said he did not mean to hurt Victim 1.<\/p>\n

Why is the charge higher?<\/h2>\n

The complaint says the charge is higher because of a prior conviction.<\/p>\n

Records cited in the filing list a 2023 case in Mahnomen County.<\/p>\n

That case was for violating a harassment restraining order.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors list it as a qualifying offense for the enhancement.<\/p>\n
