Prosecutors say Jerry Allen Stangel, 50, wore a mask and knocked on the door.<\/p>\n

The visit came the night before the planned testimony in a drug case.<\/p>\n

That case involved Stangel\u2019s wife, according to the criminal complaint.<\/p>\n

Stangel faces three felony counts and one misdemeanor count.<\/p>\n

The felonies include first-degree witness tampering.<\/p>\n

They also include harassment with a dangerous weapon.<\/p>\n

The misdemeanor charge is trespass, court records say.<\/p>\n

What the police say happened<\/h2>\n

A resident, listed as MWJ, called police about suspicious activity.<\/p>\n

MWJ is described as an off-duty law enforcement officer.<\/p>\n

The caller said a masked man claimed he was out of gas.<\/p>\n

MWJ did not open the door, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

The man left a short time later.<\/p>\n

Police soon stopped a Jeep Grand Cherokee leaving the area.<\/p>\n

Officers identified the driver as Jerry Allen Stangel.<\/p>\n

Stangel said he was lost while driving from Elk River to Walker.<\/p>\n

He said he was low on gas and needed help.<\/p>\n

Officers released him at first, records say.<\/p>\n

Police later learned MWJ was set to testify the next day.<\/p>\n

That testimony was tied to the case against Stangel\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n

Officers later found Stangel at a Holiday<\/a> gas station.<\/p>\n

They arrested him there, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

Evidence recovered<\/h2>\n

Police say Stangel admitted he searched online for MWJ\u2019s address.<\/p>\n

He told officers he wanted to \u201cbeat him up,\u201d the complaint says.<\/p>\n

He also accused MWJ of altering evidence and lying in the drug case.<\/p>\n

Police say Stangel threw a gun from his vehicle after seeing squad cars.<\/p>\n

The next morning, officers followed footprints in the snow near the home.<\/p>\n

They found a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun in a nearby snowbank.<\/p>\n

The handgun had an extended magazine, police said.<\/p>\n

Investigators also found a note with MWJ\u2019s name and address.<\/p>\n

The note was inside Stangel\u2019s vehicle, the complaint says.<\/p>\n

Charges and court action<\/h2>\n

The complaint cites Minn. Stat. 609.498<\/a> and Minn. Stat. 609.749<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those laws cover witness tampering and harassment crimes.<\/p>\n

Trespass is often charged under Minn. Stat. 609.605<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The alleged offense date is January 26, 2026.<\/p>\n

The charges were filed on January 28, 2026.<\/p>\n

Stangel appeared in court on January 28, 2026.<\/p>\n

Judge Kristine DeMay set bail at $2,000,000 without conditions.<\/p>\n

The case remains pending in Crow Wing County District Court.<\/p>\n
