Stearns County (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>)<\/strong> \u2014 A pickup truck broke through the lake ice near Horseshoe Lake in Munson Township.<\/p>\n

What happened<\/h2>\n

Deputies were called at about 5:10 p.m. on January 29, 2026.<\/p>\n

A 911 caller said the driver was out of the water.<\/p>\n

The caller also said the driver was safe.<\/p>\n

When deputies arrived, they saw the front of a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado underwater.<\/p>\n

The truck sat partly submerged near Eastway Court.<\/p>\n

The driver was identified as Joshua Blommer, 30, of Richmond.<\/p>\n

Blommer told deputies he drove onto the lake from shore.<\/p>\n

He said he was about 50 to 75 feet out.<\/p>\n

He said the front end dropped fast.<\/p>\n

He said the truck sank right away.<\/p>\n

Blommer got out of the cab quickly.<\/p>\n

He made it back to shore without injury.<\/p>\n

Officials said no other people were in the truck.<\/p>\n

The ice was thin near the break<\/h2>\n

Deputies checked the ice near the hole.<\/p>\n

They found about five inches of ice in that spot.<\/p>\n

They believed other parts of the lake had thicker ice.<\/p>\n

They estimated about 19 inches in many areas.<\/p>\n

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources<\/a> assisted at the scene.<\/p>\n

The Stearns County Sheriff\u2019s Office did not report any injuries.<\/p>\n

It did not report any charges in the incident.<\/p>\n

Safety reminder for lake users<\/h2>\n

Officials warned the public about thin ice.<\/p>\n

They said ice can change over short distances.<\/p>\n

They also warned that currents can weaken ice.<\/p>\n

The Minnesota DNR ice safety page<\/a> says ice is never 100% safe.<\/p>\n

The DNR also says it does not measure ice thickness on lakes.<\/p>\n

It urges people to check the thickness often.<\/p>\n

The DNR also posts ice thickness guidelines<\/a> for new, clear ice.<\/p>\n

Those guides list about 13 inches for a medium truck.<\/p>\n

They also note snow and slush can weaken ice.<\/p>\n
