Otter Tail County<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A 73-year-old man died in a fire west of Wadena on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The Otter Tail County Sheriff\u2019s Office said David Hanes, 73, was found inside the home.<\/p>\n

Deputies were notified at about 7:40 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026.<\/p>\n

A caller reported a structure fire at a rural residence in Compton Township.<\/p>\n

The home sits west of the Wadena city limits, according to the sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

What happened<\/h2>\n

First responders arrived and saw heavy fire at the residence.<\/p>\n

An unresponsive man was located inside the structure.<\/p>\n

Fire crews and medics started life-saving care at the scene.<\/p>\n

Hanes was then transported to Astera Health<\/a> for emergency treatment.<\/p>\n

He later died at the hospital, officials said.<\/p>\n

Investigators also located the family\u2019s dog dead inside the building.<\/p>\n

The residence was declared a total loss.<\/p>\n

Multiple agencies and departments were sent to the scene.<\/p>\n

Wadena, Bluffton, Deer Creek, and Henning fire departments assisted with the response.<\/p>\n

Henning Ambulance also provided medical support.<\/p>\n

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal<\/a> responded to help with the investigation.<\/p>\n

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

Officials said the fire is believed to be non-suspicious at this time.<\/p>\n

The case is being worked by the Fire Marshal and the Otter Tail County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Investigators will examine the scene for the fire\u2019s cause and point of origin.<\/p>\n

They will also review witness reports and physical evidence.<\/p>\n
