Grand Forks County<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) Child abuse and neglect charges were filed Thursday. Court records name Nicholas James and Tashneena Martell.<\/p>\n

The case is tied to a visit on Dec. 31, 2025. Officers arrived to serve a writ of eviction, records say.<\/p>\n

Inside, officers found three adults and four children, according to the file. The children were ages 2, 4, 6, and 14. Records say James is the children\u2019s father.<\/p>\n

Investigators wrote that James smelled of alcohol that morning. The children appeared clean and dressed well, the report says. Officers still described the home as not safe.<\/p>\n

Records say the kitchen sink was backed up. Standing water filled the basin, the report states. Dirty pots and pans sat on the stove, officers wrote.<\/p>\n

Several full garbage bags were in the kitchen, according to the file. Officers also reported garbage and old food in other rooms.<\/p>\n

Clothing, dishes, and other items covered parts of the floor, records say. Officers wrote that it was hard to walk safely.<\/p>\n

Officers described the carpet and furniture as dirty and sticky. They also noted stains on several surfaces.<\/p>\n

In a bedroom, officers found a mattress without sheets, the report states. The record describes the mattress as dark from heavy dirt.<\/p>\n

Investigators also noted writing on a wall, according to the file. The writing included profanity and references to drug use.<\/p>\n

Officials wrote that the apartment was not fit for small children. The report says the conditions raised health concerns.<\/p>\n
